Last week tried out the Travel Battle rules from the Perries using
my 54mm collection. This was on a 6' x 4' table with 4" squares, so 12"
deep and 18" wide - very slightly narrower than the travel battle
board.
Just set up some terrain and played an encounter game with the
victory conditions being to destroy two of the enemy brigades as per the
original rules.
The game was fun, moves quickly and the rules are simple enough to
remember - though I did get some of the cavalry rules wrong initially
which affected my left flank cavalry brigade.
Eventually, the Prussians/British broke the French for a win.
We are thinking of trying out an historical scenario next time with the same rules.

What a particularly joyous bit of wargaming. I have been through the photos a few times, just staring into them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm. We tried another Travel Battle game today at Anthony’s using his 1/72nd scale collection and a one hour wargame scenario - number 17.
ReplyDeleteWe doubled the armies to 12 units but kept the 3 brigades and in the scenario when dicing for reinforcements we brought on a brigade each time.
It was a fun game that ran until turn 14 out of 15 ( no one got reinforcements until turn 8 due to low rolls).
The French won helped by having 2 cavalry units with the British having none and the extra dice for cavalry against infantry not in square helped as the French were able to use combined arms fairly effectively.
Will definitely try that experiment again.
Nice setup!
ReplyDeleteUpscaled to 54mm it's hardly a 'Travel' Battle anymore, but I love your adaption. Do you have one of the original games as well?
Anthony has the original game - I am tempted to buy a copy if I could think of a use for the figures that come with it. I wouldn’t use them for Napoleonics as my firm rule is to not double up on scales in the same period
DeleteGreat fun and a super set up.
