I have started the long process of texturing and painting the Dendermonde walls. The techinique is to coat the structure with a thinned coat of PVA glue and then to apply a single ply of tissue paper to it.
Then you paint another layer of PVA over the top. This produces a textured surface that can be sprayed grey and then dry brushed to highlight and bring out the texture.
I use cheap "Saxon" 2-ply tissues from Aldi which are large and easily separate.
The end result when dry is this:
City walls are done and most of the Ravelins. Next up are 2 Demilunes and then the 3 Bastions. I need to cut some window and door frames for the city gate before I can texture that and also need to tile the roof.
The effect once painted is shown on the sample ravelin here:
Nice modelling technique!
ReplyDeleteI recently used a similar approach to hide 'layer lines' on a 3D printed model of sandbags. I've also used this technique for making tarpaulin loads for my model railway. Since the latter was going to be used outside I gave it several coats of undiluted ModPodge as a seling. It's practically the same as pva glue.
I'm looking forward to see their progress of your wells.
thanks - I am planning on texturing everything I have built sofar so I can paint them fairly consistently all in one go.
ReplyDeleteAfter that it will be on to the Glacis and working out how to do the slopes with either grass matting or something else...
Clever in its absolute simplicity V effect. I am going to try this on an MDF building
ReplyDeleteIt does work surprisingly well - if you look back at the sample ravelin I made and painted - that uses the same technique
